Every morning, besides the alarm clock and our parents, there is another important “friend” that wakes us up – the sun. Without the sun, our lives would be in a lot of trouble.
Even though from Earth, the sun looks like just a small, round ball of iron, it’s actually really big; they say it could fit a million Earths inside! The sun is also extremely hot; its surface temperature is so high that it can melt steel. Even deeper inside, it’s even hotter, making it impossible to get close to it. It’s like a huge fireball hanging in the sky, shining and giving off heat for us every day.
Thanks to the sun, we have days, and we can see the flowers, plants, trees, and buildings around us. In winter, when the sun comes out, we feel warm, and the snow on the ground slowly melts, so we don’t need to wear thick coats all the time. Plants also depend on the sun to grow. Without it, the grass would turn yellow, the flowers wouldn’t bloom, and we wouldn’t be able to eat fresh vegetables and fruits.
On sunny days, mom takes the blankets outside to the balcony to dry them, saying that the sun can kill the little bacteria on them. Even when we sleep under those blankets at night, they still smell of the sun. With the sun during the day, we don’t need to turn on the lights at home, which helps save electricity. The streetlights powered by solar energy and the solar panels in our neighborhoods all work thanks to the sun, allowing them to charge our phones, watches, and other devices.
If one day the sun disappeared, the world would become completely dark and get colder and colder. Humans, small animals, and plants wouldn’t be able to survive. So the sun is really important to us, and we should be very grateful for it.
