In the great forest, there lived a family of little rabbits. The little rabbit was particularly lazy and always stayed at home, unwilling to move at all. One day, its mother looked at the empty rice jar and said, “Little Rabbit, we don’t have any food left. Go pick some mushrooms and bring them back!” The little rabbit pouted and replied impatiently, “Okay, I’m going right now.”
The little rabbit walked to the riverbank and was just about to bend down to pick mushrooms when it saw a big gray wolf on the other side shouting at it, “Little Rabbit, come over! There are so many mushrooms here—many more than there are with you! I promise I won’t eat you!” The little rabbit looked at the gray wolf, which seemed so eager that saliva was almost dripping from its mouth, and thought to itself, “That’s a lie! You definitely want to eat me as a snack!” It shouted back, “I’m not going to fall for it! Just wait until you starve!”
Just then, it started to rain. The little rabbit quickly hid in a tree hole nearby, while the gray wolf continued to call out from the other side, “Don’t run, Little Rabbit!” But the little rabbit ignored it. At that moment, a tortoise slowly surfaced and asked, “Little Rabbit, are you in trouble?” The little rabbit nodded and said, “Big Brother Tortoise, I wanted to cross the river to pick some mushrooms, but there’s a big gray wolf on the other side.” The tortoise smiled and said, “I’ll take you to the small island in the middle of the river; there are lots of mushrooms there, and it’s also safe.”
The little rabbit climbed onto the tortoise’s back, and soon they arrived at the island. The gray wolf, desperate, started circling on the other side and then jumped into the water, only to sink with a splash—it couldn’t swim at all! The tortoise yawned and said, “I’m going to take a nap first; wake me up when you’re done picking mushrooms.” The little rabbit quickly filled its basket with mushrooms, and after the tortoise woke up, it returned home on the tortoise’s “little boat.”
The mother, seeing the full basket of mushrooms, smiled and said, “My little rabbit has grown up! Remember, be careful of bad people, but always be grateful to those who help you.”
