The ever-changing Chinese language teacher

My homeroom teacher, Ms. Zhou, is a “magician” when it comes to teaching Chinese language. She’s not very tall and has short, golden hair. Her round face features a pair of eyes that seem to have a way of speaking for themselves. Don’t underestimate those eyes—whenever the classroom gets noisy, she just needs to cast a glance, and everyone falls silent as if a “mute button” had been pressed. We all admire her and say, “With just one look from Ms. Zhou, everything comes into order!”

Ms. Zhou’s lessons are like a fantastic “face-changing show.” When we were studying the text “The Pearl Bird,” she completely transformed into the character from the story. When she read about the bird’s fear of people, she lowered her voice and hunched her shoulders, as if she were that timid little bird herself. As the bird gradually approached her, her voice became gentle and full of anticipation. By the time the bird fully trusted her and fell asleep on her shoulder, Ms. Zhou’s voice was filled with warmth and emotion, and a relieved smile appeared on her face. Just as we were engrossed in the story, a student started whispering. Ms. Zhou immediately stopped reading; with just one look from her eyes, that student sat up straight immediately. The whole class couldn’t help but snicker—those eyes had more power than Sun Wukong’s golden cudgel!
Ms. Zhou is also very creative when it comes to teaching methods. When we encounter difficult texts, she helps us create mind maps, turning long passages into colorful illustrations. When learning new words, she asks us to use them in real-life situations, making the knowledge come alive. In her class, every student eagerly raises their hand because there’s a group scoring competition going on! Even those students who usually don’t like to speak are guided gently by Ms. Zhou until they confidently share their answers.
Ms. Zhou is like a magical magician, always managing to turn the sometimes dull Chinese language lessons into exciting experiences. Sometimes she’s an expressive reader, sometimes a strict “disciplinarian” with a sharp eye, and at other times, she becomes a patient, supportive “good friend.” All these changes stem from her love for us. Thank you, Ms. Zhou—for showing us that Chinese language classes can be so much more fun!
