“Hello, my students!” a gentle greeting came from the teacher, but it made all of us shiver with fear—whenever that voice sounded, someone was about to get in trouble. We secretly called this greeting the “prelude to doom,” and there was even a saying in our class: “As soon as the teacher arrives, everyone falls silent!”
I remember once, my deskmate was playing with Brueckner building blocks in his drawer, murmuring to himself while fitting them together, with the occasional clanging sound. Everyone else in the class was quietly listening to the lecture, but only he was making a noise. The English teacher immediately cast a stern glance in his direction and walked over quickly.
“Are the toys fun?” the teacher asked with a smile. However, my deskmate didn’t even lift his head and just muttered, “Stop bothering me! I’m building blocks!” The teacher, who had been smiling just a second before, suddenly looked as serious as frost, and everyone in the class took a deep breath of shock. The teacher grabbed his ear and said through gritted teeth, “You little rascal, are you trying to get into trouble?”
But the teacher wasn’t always so strict; sometimes she was as gentle as a mother. Once, a classmate dislocated his jaw and was crying while holding it. The teacher quickly took out her phone to call his parents. After hanging up, she knelt down, gently placed her hands on the classmate’s jaw, and with a quick movement, it snapped back into place. The classmate was stunned for a moment, then stopped crying immediately and kept saying, “Thank you, teacher.”
That’s my English teacher. Although she can be very scary when she gets angry, whether she is criticizing us or helping us with emergencies, she always does it for our own good. We may not say it out loud, but we all understand her kindness in our hearts.
